The Golden Cheeked Warbler of is one of several endangered species with protected habitat in the Volente area.
US Fish and Wildlife Service, a federal agency, has the responsibility of ensuring the protection of species listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Travis County, City of Austin, LCRA and other participants have worked with USFWS to create the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan, or BCCP. There are several sections of habitat in the Volente area already set aside as part of the BCCP, and more are planned. One such preserve is the Travis Audubon Society's Wildlife Sanctuary on Lime Creek Road, established in 1979.
