Fire Department Petition for ESD Successful!
We reported in the June edition that VNA was helping gather signatures
for a petition regarding creating an Emergency Services District (ESD).
Volente’s fire department is the only one remaining in Travis County that
is not now funded by an ESD. Without an ESD, Volente VFD may not have enough
funds to adequately protect your lives and property in the future.
VNA has helped gather more than the required number of signatures.
Thanks to all the volunteers and to VJs Café for helping in the
effort.
ESD Election Will Be Nov. 2, 1999
Once the validated petitions are turned into the Rural Fire District 11
Commissioners, they will call for an election to take place on November
2, 1999. This is a General Election Day, which will save Volente some costs
versus holding a special election.
Be sure your voter registration is up to date and make sure you vote
for the ESD on Election Day! Voter registration forms are available at
VJs Café.

Lake Travis Neighborhood Council Being Formed
A group of Lake Travis residents are forming the Lake Travis Neighborhood
Council. LTNC will provide a forum for area neighborhood associations to
share information and ideas and to pool their resources in dealing with
common issues. Mike Hebert, who is also a member of the Lake Travis Advisory
Panel, is promoting the formation of LTNC to deal with the issues of boat
noise and safety on Lake Travis. For more information on LTNC, see

Curbside Recycling?
VNA board member Catriona Smith reports that Midtex Waste, Inc. could provide
Volente residents with curbside recycling if there is enough interest and
participation. The cost to Midtex customers would probably only be an additional
$6/quarter, with Midtex providing the recycling bins. If you are interested
in having curbside recycling in Volente, contact Catriona at 250-0108 or

VNA Web Site a "Hit"
Volente's web site at http://www.volente.org/
is getting more and more "hits" (accesses), as more web surfers become
aware of it. The site is now averaging more than 500 hits each month. If
you haven't visited lately, some of the items creating the most interest
are:

The electronic version of "A Legend Collection" - fascinating historical
accounts of our area published by Anderson Mill Gardeners

Volente Postal Service May Be Changed to Cedar
Park
The United States Post Office is considering changing Volente's mail delivery
service from Leander to the Cedar Park Post Office.
Besides the inconvenience of changing their mailing address (city and
zip code), many residents have expressed they do not want to have a "Cedar
Park" address and do not want to lose the current mail carrier, Janice
Trump, who reportedly does a great job.
The Opportunity
First, USPS has indicated it would be possible to keep the current
mail carrier; Janice would simply report out of the Cedar Park office after
the change. And while it would be necessary for Volente to use a Cedar
Park zip code (78630 or 78713), it MAY be possible to get official USPS
permission to use "Volente" as the place name instead of "Cedar Park".
While many residents already use "Volente" along with the Leander zip code,
USPS does not sanction it. VNA has received indications that USPS may be
persuaded by public opinion to officially designate "Volente, Texas 78630"
- in conjunction with the reassignment to Cedar Park. A petition drive
or poll may be necessary to convince USPS.
