Our August meeting  featured Kevin Klaus from the General Land Office. He brought us copies of some very interesting documents of the Michael Pevitoe Land Grant , who received his Bounty for military service including the Battle of San Jacinto with General Sam Houston., March 1836. According to a biographical sketch written by Louis W. Kemp, between 1930 and 1952 he did not live long after his discharge. If his heirs homesteaded here we do not know. We do know that at this time the Comanche Indians considered this part of Texas their lands and fought hard to keep the white man out.

Winola Van Artsdalen shares garden and landscape advice for October. Fall is the time to save seeds, root cuttings, and plant wildflowers.

Our next meeting is Thursday, Oct.9 at noon. Our speaker will Lela Jane Tinstman, Volente resident, on Growing and Photographing Orchids. To attend as a guest, please RSVP to any of the contacts below. Think you might be interested in joining? See Membership for more info.
