FIRE SAFETY TIP - STAY PUT WHEN YOU COOK
STAND BY YOUR PAN image

The Travis County Fire Marshal's Office is spreading the word about the dangers of kitchen fires. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, most of which are the result of unattended cooking.

"Many people leave the kitchen when they are cooking, thinking that not standing by the stove for a few minutes won't matter," said Travis County Fire Marshal Hershel Lee. "Unfortunately, that's all it takes to start a fire."

Nationwide, fire departments responded to more than 156,000 home fires annually between 2007 and 2011. Unattended cooking was a factor in one-third of the reported cooking fires.

Help prevent kitchen fires by following these safety steps:

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food.
  • When you cook, check it regularly; stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.
  • Keep a three-foot, kid-free zone around cooking areas.
  • When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves.
  • Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels, and anything else that can burn, away from the stovetop.
  • Clean up food and grease from burners and stovetops.

Increase your and your family's safety by making sure your home has working smoke alarms, and check them regularly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. Finally, create a home fire escape plan and practice it with all members of your household.
