Public participation in Community Wildfire Protection Plan requested

Travis County and the City of Austin are partnering to produce a countywide Community Wildfire Protection Plan designed to provide the framework for the area's efforts to become a fire-adapted community-a community that has taken significant steps to reduce its risk of wildfire damage.

The plan will assist area cities and communities in understanding their wildfire risks and provide guidance for reducing the wildfire threat to avoid potentially catastrophic fires. Lead by the Austin and Travis County Joint Wildfire Task Force, the effort includes scheduled opportunities for community leaders, neighborhood groups, natural resource organizations, and any interested persons to participate in plan development.

A series of three meetings is scheduled in five areas of the county during the next several weeks. These facilitated meetings are designed to encourage the public's help in identifying: local issues related to wildland fire risk, local assets requiring protection, and recommendations for addressing wildfire risks.

All meetings are open to the public and scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. Meeting locations and dates follow:

Travis County East Service Center-6011 Blue Bluff Road, Austin-May 14, 15 and 16

700 Lavaca Building-Austin, (First-floor, multifunction rooms)-May 20, 22 and 23

Travis County West Service Center-4501 RR 620 North, Austin-May 28, 29 and 30

Pflugerville Fire Department-2003-B East Pecan Street, Pflugerville-June 4, 5 and 6

North Travis County Fire & Rescue-18300 Park Drive, Jonestown-June 11, 12 and 13

Planners will consider the information gathered at the regional meetings while crafting the final Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which is scheduled for presentation to the Joint Wildfire Task Force in early September. Community participants are encouraged to attend all three of the meetings at the location of their choice, if possible. For more information or questions, please contact one of the following:
