by Ken Beck

Ballot Box
Dear residents of the greater Volente area,

With the Supreme Court finally deciding on the redistricting in the state of Texas, we now know the schedule for elections this year. I thought that it would be very helpful to summarize for all of you where we stand, who represents us, and who we will be voting for this May and November.

April 30th was the first day to vote early in the City of Austin municipal elections.  Early voting will end on Tuesday, May 8th with election day falling on Saturday, May 12thYou can view a list of early voting locations here.  The photo identification requirement WILL NOT be in effect for this election.  The Department of Justice denied pre-clearance of the law, and a trial date has been tentatively set for July 9th (although it looks like this could get delayed even further.)

If you are not currently registered, April 30th was the last day to register to vote for the primary election on Tuesday, May 29th.  Early voting for the primary will run from Monday, May 14th through Friday, May 25th. This election helps select the candidates that will run in the general election this November.

U.S. Representative -  we are in U.S. Congressional District 10 and are represented by R - Michael McCaul. The candidates in the primary will be

Democratic Primary

   Tawana Cadien

   William Miller, Jr.

Republican Primary

  Michael McCaul: Incumbent

  Eddie Traylor

Libertarian Convention

  Richard Priest

State of Texas House of Representatives - we are now residents of District 47 and our representative is R - Paul Workman. The candidates in the primary will be

GOP primary candidates:

      Ryan Downtown

Paul Workman - Incumbent Workman was first elected in 2010.

Libertarian primary candidates:

                                      Nick Tanner

Travis County Commissioner Precinct 3 - we remain in Precinct 3 even though there have been changes to the layout of the district. The primary candidates are

            Democratic primary candidates:

                                     Karen Huber, incumbent

                                     Alberto Gonzalez

            Republican primary candidates:

                                     Gerald Daugherty

                                     Jim Strickland

                                     Ira Yates

Village of Volente village council - there will be three positions up for election this November in the general election - Mayor Justine Blackmore-Hlista, Council member Frederick Graber, and Council member Judy Graci.  The filing window for these positions opens on July 21st and closes on August 20th.

You can view a full election schedule here. We would encourage you to take a look because the run-off for municipal elections and the primary will take place on June 23rd and July 31st respectively.  These are prime vacation times, so you will want to plan ahead and request a mail-in ballot if you will be out of town during the entire span of either election (early vote and E-day).

You can download an application for a ballot by mail here.  To vote by mail, you must request a ballot - they are not mailed out automatically.  The application must be received no earlier than 60 days before the election and no later than the close of business 7 days prior to election day.  You can read more about voting by mail here.

Yours truly,   Ken Beck, President, Volente Neighborhood Association
