| RESULTS
FROM SHORELINE CLEANUP
Results
are in from the Volente Shoreline Cleanup and they are
indeed impressive:
1) Debris: Six 30-yard dumpsters for a total of 180
cubic yards, weighing at total of 18 tons;
2) Recyclable steel: One 30-yard dumpster was
filled with steel weighing 4.5 tons; 3)
Tires: 76
4) Batteries: 31
We impressed the heck out
of the folks at Keep Austin Beautiful and
Colorado River Foundation that organized the lake-wide
15th Annual Underwater and Shoreline Cleanup.
They normally see a total of 1-2
dumpsters filled during the event.
Lakeway made a similar effort, also
organized by Protect Lake
Travis Association. They ran a close second,
also with 180 cubic yards of debris. However,
their total tonnage was only 12 tons compared to our 18
tons - they just did not pack their dumpsters the way we
did in Volente (photo).
We need to single out and thank: Jan
Yenawine (top photo) for extensive use of his time and
barge to transport materials; Frank (photo right) and
Carrie Carter of Highland Lakes
Marina who let us use their location, boat ramp and
equipment; Todd Kahler of Anderson Mill
Marina for use of his facility and personnel; Don
Green and his company, Central Texas
Refuse, for their donations, reduced
pricing and cooperation; Waste
Management for donating two dumpsters at Anderson
Mill Marina; the city council of Village of Volente,
which provided the much-needed contingency funds which
allowed us to keep going long after we exceeded the
donated dumpster capacity; Volente
Neighborhood Association for additional funds and
support; Robert Nelson of R. Nelson Concrete who brought
his backhoe/loader to help load and pack dumpsters; Al
Blunt for providing planning and coordination; and Walt
Thompson, who was the first to take charge of a cove
cleanup and showed us all how it could be done.
And a big THANK YOU to all of you who
participated.

the event at: http://volente.phanfare.com/4356399 .

LCRA: DROUGHT STILL CONTINUES
DESPITE RAIN
Intensity of drought
surpasses previous droughts Despite
scattered rainfall, the Colorado River basin remains in
a severe drought that is affecting water supply, LCRA
staff told the Board of Directors this week. As a
result, LCRA is considering whether to take additional
drought management actions. Within the past several
weeks, LCRA has asked its wholesale water customers to
implement mandatory watering restrictions, with the goal
of a 25 percent reduction in water use. LCRA staff has
already been talking to agricultural customers in the
lower Colorado River basin to advise them of the
possibility that water releases for irrigation could be
sharply curtailed next year.

The
Anderson Mill Gardeners' Open House and Plant
Sale Sunday Sept.27, 2-5pm Free tours of the Mill
and Museum
From Julia Land: Our member
Cornelia Ferrell of Hutto has been a very productive
gardener this summer unlike many of our lake area
residents. We will have her Ruby Crystal grass, ruella,
pavonia, Mexican mint marigold, yaupon, English ivy, and
Mexican petunia. Plus many other plants, cuttings, seed
pods of member favorites.
Josh Hinkle's
story including Miss Minnie's Mill and Martha Walgren
can still be seen HERE (KXAN
website).
Once the context and the story is lost, historic
artifacts in our area are easily mistaken for abandoned
old junk. They are often rusty, rotted and/or covered
with lake muck. Unlike King Tut's treasures, they may
have been crudely built to begin with.
March 27,1966, A.T. Jackson attended the
dedication of the restored Anderson Mill and took this
photo and made this note of the original millstone case
and
pulley. | |
